How to decorate for a white, Swedish-style Christmas

For us, Christmas is all about light – the kind that flickers and the kind you see in the colours. White, off-white and soft grey make a calm backdrop where evergreen and a few touches of red really glow. Here's how we build it up, step by step – with a few Swedish traditions if this is your first Christmas here.

1. Start with light

Swedish winters are dark, so light makes the biggest difference. Put an advent candle holder in the window and hang an advent star for the first Sunday of Advent – 29 November in 2026. Walk down any Swedish street in December and you'll see both in almost every window. Add string lights to shelves and window recesses, and group pillar candles on a tray or in lanterns.

2. Keep the palette light

A white Christmas never feels cold when you mix shades and materials: creamy textiles, pale wood, aged metal and glass. Let the green of trees and wreaths bring the colour, and use red sparingly – a ribbon, a few baubles or a tomte's hat goes a long way.

3. Choose a tree that fits the room

A pre-lit Christmas tree is the easy option – the lights are already in place, year after year. If you'd rather pick your own lights, go for a tree without lights and add separate tree lights. On a dresser, a staircase or the Christmas table, a couple of small decorative trees do a lot.

4. Decorate from the front door in

First impressions start at the entrance. A wreath on the door, lanterns on the steps and a few outdoor Christmas decorations welcome guests before they're inside. Indoors, wreaths and garlands tie the rooms together, while tomte gnomes – Sweden's own Christmas figure – and Christmas pots fill windowsills and shelves.

5. Don't forget the kitchen and Lucia

So much of Christmas happens in the kitchen, so let the decorations follow you there – a small wreath, candles on the counter, a few details in white and green. And on 13 December, Lucia is the Swedish festival of light: a lovely reason to light even more candles.

Christmas decorations FAQ

When do people in Sweden start decorating for Christmas?

Many Swedes start on the first Sunday of Advent, which falls on 29 November in 2026. The advent candle holder and advent star usually go up first, and the tree closer to Christmas. But there are no rules – decorate when it feels right for you.

Pre-lit or unlit Christmas tree – which should I choose?

A pre-lit tree is quick to set up and the light is evenly spread. An unlit tree lets you choose your own lights and change the look from year to year. Check the height and width in the product description so the tree suits your room.

How do I make white Christmas decor feel warm?

Mix several shades of white with natural materials like wood, linen and glass, and let candles or warm-white string lights create a soft glow. Greenery from trees and wreaths adds life, and a couple of red details is all it takes to feel festive.

Can I use string lights and decorations outdoors?

Only use items marked for outdoor use. Look for the IP rating in the product description – IP44 or higher is common for lighting that needs to handle rain and snow.

What's the difference between an advent candle holder and an advent star?

An advent candle holder holds several candles – often an electric arch for the window, or a holder for four candles where you light one more each Sunday of Advent. An advent star is a lit star that hangs in the window. Both traditionally come out on the first Sunday of Advent.

How should I store my Christmas decorations?

Keep them somewhere cool and dry. Wrap fragile pieces in tissue paper, wind string lights around a piece of cardboard so they don't tangle, and pack an artificial tree in a bag or box so it keeps its shape until next year.
