The tradition of the Christmas goat is largely only known in Scandinavia, but exactly when and how it became part of Christmas is not known for certain. One theory is that it is a remnant of an old Viking custom at the winter solstice, where a goat was sacrificed as a symbol of the thunder god Thor's goats to ensure a good year.
